Why gutter cleaning matters in Indiana

Gutter cleaning is the most skipped item on most homeowners maintenance lists, and one of the most consequential when neglected. A gutter blocked with leaves and debris cannot drain. Water backs up, sits against the fascia, and works its way into the soffit. In winter it freezes in the channel and expands, pulling fasteners out of the fascia and causing the gutter to sag or detach entirely.

Northern Indiana adds a few specific challenges. Mature hardwoods drop heavy volumes of leaves in fall. Maple seeds fill gutters in spring. Pine needles compact and hold moisture year-round. Shingle grit from aging roofs accumulates at the bottom of the channel and can block downspout openings even when the gutter itself looks clear from the ground.

How often should you clean your gutters?

For most Northern Indiana homes, twice a year is the baseline: once in late spring after the maple seed drop and once in late fall after the leaves are finished coming down. Homes with heavy oak, maple, or pine coverage nearby may need cleaning three or four times a year to stay ahead of debris buildup.

A good rule of thumb: if you notice water spilling over the edge of the gutter during rain, or if you can see debris or plants growing in the channel from the ground, it is overdue for a cleaning regardless of when it was last done.

What our cleaning process includes

We clear all debris from the gutter channels by hand and by flush. We run water through the downspouts to confirm they are flowing freely all the way to the ground drain or discharge point. We check for any blockages at underground drain connections that cause water to back up into the channel. And we inspect the gutter system for damage while we are up there, including loose fasteners, leaking joints and sections losing pitch, and we report anything we find.

We do not just scoop and go. A gutter that looks clean but has a blocked downspout will back up and overflow just as fast as one full of leaves. The goal is a system that functions correctly, not just one that looks clear from the ground.
